CHASING ICE- The most important film of the year

Every year, there are numerous documentaries released that simply do not get the attention of an audience that they deserve. CHASING ICE, the story of one man’s mission to raise awareness of climate change by photographing the world’s disappearing glaciers, is one of those films. It’s definitely not a film that many people would think of going to see at the theatre. But it is a film that I urge everyone to take the time to watch, it is undeniable proof that our planet is warming at unprecedented rates.

Balog and his team designed truly one a kind timelapse equipment to deploy in over 20 locations across the Arctic. The extreme weather conditions meant that their gear would have to withstand hurricane strength winds, blizzards, and temperatures well below -40C; truly a monumental technological feat in its own right. They used Nikon DSLR’s attached to a custom engineered computer that would trigger photos incrementally throughout the year, giving us a super high-speed view of the glacier calving process. All of the glaciers shot by Balog were receding, some at a rate 5 fold from just half a century ago. One of the glaciers receded so quickly that the camera had to be repositioned 4 times to follow it up the fjord! That was really striking for me. My academic background is in physical geography and receding glaciers is not new to me, but to see that much of a recession, in less than 5 years, was beyond belief.

CHECK OUT THIS FILM FOR YOURSELF!  Balog and his team deserve very high praise for what they have accomplished here; a very powerful film about the urgency of our dire situation.

Chasing Ice follows Balog and his Extreme Ice Survey team as they set up cameras by glaciers in extremely remote places — from Greenland to Alaska. The images and video they capture over three years are truly breathtaking — the team captures climate change on film.
