Check out the tests we conducted here.
First off, I want to thank Marti & Matt for their time and hard work in making these tests happen. Also for making them enjoyable 🙂
In an attempt not to duplicate what has been said in the video, I’m just going to talk about the things that really stood out to us after watching the tests.
First off, Protune is AWESOME!!! Seriously, hats off to GoPro for thinking of the pros on this one and adding it to the firmware upgrade. Great results as you can see from both the Hero 2 and 3. Have to remember here that Protune does not apply any sharpening to the image, so unlike the Hero 1 where its sharp as hell out of the box, the Hero 2 and 3 preserve more detail and can be sharpened in post.
Secondly, the 2.7K 24P mode on the Hero 3 is NICE! Super sharp and the wide image can be cropped on a 1080 timeline because of that extra real estate. Unfortunately 4K at this point is practically useless at 12FPS…and hopefully GoPro is eagerly working on a 24FPS upgrade 😉
The case on the Hero 3 Black is a much needed upgrade. The flat lens cover is just what swimmers and scuba divers were begging for; no more blurry underwater shots!
The battery life SUCKS, really really sucks. At best you may get 45mins of shooting at 2.7K, with the battery back pack, maybe 1.5hrs. In the cold expect that to drop dramatically. Invest in batteries!
I want to apologize for the action test, we were losing our light, everyone was cold, batteries were dying. We’re hoping to do a better one next summer.
Bottom Line: If you can afford it, go for the Hero 3 Black Edition. Fantastic camera with loads of features and the included remote is a huge bonus. If you’re on a tight budget, go for the Hero 2 which can still be picked up for less than $200. With Protune it’s a nice little cam. Anymore than that and you might as well go for a Hero 3 White or Silver, but remember, both don’t come with the Wi-Fi Remote; an $80 extra on its own.
Stay tuned, as I have a very important announcement coming soon!
